The former Convento do Salvador was consecrated on July 24, 1610, and given to Poor Clare nuns. The church is a beautiful Baroque example, perfectly aligned with the Gesamtkunstwerk concept – the total artwork, in which all the arts contribute to the creation of unique environments in the exaltation of Christian spirituality. In the late 19th century, the convent closed, following the extinction of the religious orders in Portugal. It served then as the artillery headquarters until its demolition in the 1940s. The church, the watch-out tower and part of the cloister were preserved from destruction.
