In the Museu da Misericórdia, there are six exhibition rooms, laid out in a sequence that terminates at the nave of the church, erected in the mid-16th century and profoundly remodelled in the early 17th century. The various works of art on display and the accompanying narrative complement each other effectively to provide a fascinating context and history of this ancient institution. The visitor can learn about the fundamental objectives, the links to the city and the areas in which it has been active during its 500-year history. In addition, the museum also offers a series of graphic and interactive multimedia resources that provide deeper insight and allow visitors to understand more about specific areas of interest. At the end of the sequence, in the church’s nave, there is a gorgeous play of light and colour, a consequence of the gilded woodwork, oil painting and colourful tiles all combining in a setting that is rich and suitably Baroque.
